This is a great opportunity for an experienced Java developer to join a fast-growing payments FinTech, building high-performance backend systems processing millions of transactions daily.

This role is based in Cape Town, paying R65-80K per month.

THE ROLE:

As an Intermediate Java Software Developer, you’ll play a critical role in shaping high-performance backend systems that sit at the core of a high-volume, high-stakes payments environment.

You’ll design and build robust, scalable Java services and microservices, work with messaging and event-driven architectures to process transactions reliably at scale, and help ensure the resilience, security, and auditability that payments infrastructure demands.

You’ll work across the stack from clean, well-tested code through to cloud-native deployment, collaborating closely with other engineers in a highly collaborative, high-trust team.

THE TECH STACK:

  • Core Java (11/17/21), OOP, collections, generics, streams, concurrency and JVM performance tuning
  • Spring Boot, Spring Core/DI, Spring MVC/REST
  • Microservices and distributed systems: REST APIs, resilience, idempotency, fault tolerance and scalability
  • Messaging: Kafka, RabbitMQ or similar
  • Databases: SQL with PostgreSQL/MySQL/Oracle, plus exposure to Redis or similar NoSQL/cache tech
  • AWS, Docker, Kubernetes/EKS, CI/CD, observability and production support
  • Testing: JUnit, Mockito, integration and API/contract testing
  • Maven or Gradle, Git and standard CI pipelines
  • Payments engineering: high-throughput, low-latency processing, retries, idempotency, reconciliation and auditability

THE REQUIREMENTS:

A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or similar.

3+ years’ experience in software development

Strong, hands-on Java experience – this role needs someone who really knows what they’re doing, building high-performance backend systems

Proven analytical skills and the ability to work confidently in high-stakes, complex, and highly regulated environments
